Getting Married in Ireland

Couples getting married in Ireland need to give the Marriage Registrar at least three months’ notice of their intention to marry.

Requirements for a Catholic Church Wedding.

Couples will need to have completed all their civil requirements with the Marriage Registrar.

They should contact the Registrar at least three – four months before the wedding. This can be done on-line at www.crsappointments.ie or http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Getting_Married.aspx

Couples will need to complete a pre-marriage course. (Accord.ie)

Couples will need up to date baptism and confirmation certs, and letters of freedom from any parish they have lived in for six months or more.

These certs should then be brought to the parish priest of the parish they currently reside in, who will complete a pre-nuptual enquiry form. The priest will then forward the couples completed papers to the church where the wedding is to take place.

If the couple are living abroad, their papers will be routed through the chancery offices of the diocese they reside in and the diocese they are getting married in. These papers should be completed three months before the wedding is due to take place.

Couples travelling from abroad will also have to make a statutory declaration that they are both free to marry.
